certain plans for his work
in social service, but is also
unwilling to rely on external
sources of funding

Camera fi tted bionic eye devices for patients

MELBOURNE: Australian
scientists are close to deliver
one of the bionic eye devices
to be tested on patients
in about two years.
The bionic eye device
will consist of a tiny camera
mounted into a pair of glasses,
which acts as the retina;
a pocket processor, which
takes the electronic information
from the camera and
converts it into signals.It
enables the brain to build up
a visual construct; and cortical
implants of several tiles
which will be the portal for
the stimulation of the visual
cortex.
According to statement
by Monash University, research
to restore sight to the
clinically blind has reached
a critical stage, with testing
underway of the prototype
microchips that will power
the bionic eye. Electrical
engineers from the Monash
Vision Group (MVG) have
begun trialling the microchips,
with early laboratory
tests proving positive, and
pre-clinical assessment due
to begin shortly.
The Director of MVG,
Arthur Lowery said the
positive result meant the
project was on track to deliver
a direct-to-brain bionic
eye implant ready for patient
tests in 2014. “The aim
for this vision prosthetic
is to be at least equivalent
to a seeing-eye dog or a
white cane. While it would
initially complement existing
aids such as these, we
believe the device eventually
will replace them, and
as the technology is further
refi ned, become suffi ciently
sensitive to discriminate
large print,” Lowery said.
“The microchips we are
testing will be implanted
directly on the surface of
a patient`s visual cortex,
located at the back of the
brain. It`s estimated that
each patient will receive
a grid of up to 14 eightby-
eight millimetre tiles,”
Lowery said. Each tile
comprises a four-by-four
millimetre microchip with
some 500,000 transistors
and 45 hair-thin electrodes.
When fully operational,
these tiles will receive lowresolution,
black-and-white
images from an external
digital processing unit connected
to a high-resolution
camera. Jean-Michel Redoute,
MVG`s Programme
Leader, Implantable Electronics,
said one of the
project’s main challenges
was harnessing and powering
this array of electricallycharged
devices in the brain.
“Achieving acceptable
vision requires far more
electrode capacity than the
amount required to power
a bionic ear. While the bionic
ear requires approximately
15 electrodes, we’ll
need at least 600 to produce
useful vision for patients,”
Redoute said. Over 50,000
people in Australia are considered
clinically blind. The
number exceeds 160 million
globally.

Remo D’Souza 2nd venture “ABCD” shoot on 3D

MUMBAI: Choreographer-
turned-director Remo
D’Souza is busy with his
second directorial venture
“ABCD”, being shot in 3D.
He says working with the
technology needs patience
as it is time consuming but
the end result is superb.
“The process of fi lming in
3D is exciting but it’s time
consuming. It takes a lot of
time. Stars need a lot of patience
to shoot in 3D. But the
result is outstanding,” Remo
told IANS. His fi rst fi lm as a
director was “FALTU”.
“It is diffi cult to shoot in
3D with huge star cast. We
can shoot only one scene
a day, which is a little time
consuming...If any actor decides
to make a 3D fi lm, the
result will be outstanding,”
he added. Directed by Remo
and produced by UTV Motion
Pictures, “ABCD” features
Prabhu Deva, Ganesh
Acharya and some newcomers.
Talking about his fi lm,
Remo said: “The full form
of ‘ABCD’ is Any Body Can
Dance. This is the fi rst Indian

has a beautiful story and we
also have some best dancers
from India and abroad.”
“The fi lm will showcase
Prabhu Deva’s story, Ganesh
Acharya’s story and is also
about love and friendship.
Prabhu Deva is playing a
choreographer who is thrown
out of his dance institution.
After that he meets his old
friend Ganesh Acharya and
from there onwards they
make their own team,” he
added. Mithun Chakraborty
will make a special appearance
in the fi lm.
“I will defi nitely request
Mithun Chakraborty to do
a special appearance in my

IPL V: RCB look to continue winning streak against KKR

Bangalore: Riding high on their opening match triumph, Royal Challengers Bangalore would look to continue the winning streak when they take on a struggling Kolkata Knight Riders at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday. Led by Daniel Vettori, RCB beat Delhi Daredevils by 20 runs on Saturday and the New Zealander would hope his men would pull off yet another victory to make sure they don`t go haywire after making a good start, which has been the story until last IPL. On the other hand, after tasting two defeats in a row, Kolkata Knight Riders would look to reverse their fortunes when they play their third match against southern powerhouse RCB. RCB were impressive against DD, both A B de Villiers and Muttiah Muralitharan starred with bat and ball respectively. RCB were served well by wily Muralitharan`s three for 25, after de Villiers set it up with a blazing 64 off 42 balls. He hit six fours and two sixes in an innings that gave Bangalore the platform. On Tuesday, RCB would be hoping to get a rollicking start from Chris Gayle, who sat out due to fi tness issues in the last match, and Tillakratane Dilshan. Virat Kohli, the current toast of Indian cricket, would hope to fi re after he had a brief stay at the crease scoring just eight runs. If given a chance, Cheteshwar Pujara and Saurabh Tiwary, who know the conditions well here, can also make useful contributions. The rest of the batting too has solid names such as Andrew McDonald, de Villiers, Mayank Agarwal and Vettori apart from a tail which consists of Vinay Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Harshal Vikram Patel, who all have skills to add a few quick runs. KKR, on the fl ipside, have failed to capitalise on their good batting and bowling lineup so far. They fi rst lost to Delhi Daredevils in a rain-curtailed game and Rajasthan Royals yesterday. In their next encounter with the RCB, KKR, who became the fi rst team to lose both their matches this IPL, would look for a better batting performance and build partnerships to bounce back on the track of winning ways. Losing nine wickets in a truncated match would be a cause of worry for any captain and this continued even in their next outing against RR where they lost four quick wickets in the form of Jacques Kallis, Gautam Gambhir, Brendon McCullum and Debabrata Das for just 25 runs in six overs. Gambhir, who lost India`s vice-captaincy to Kohli, would look to give a solid start along side Kallis. A good start would help players like McCullum, Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan and Laxmi Ratan Shukla break the shackles. Tiwary would be desperate to prove a point to the Indian team management after being denied a single opportunity during the entire tri-series in Australia and the subsequent Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Tiwary was the only batsman for KKR to make a half century scoring 59 against RR.

Morkel and Pathan shines as Delhi defeat Kolkata by 8 wickets

Proteas pace bowler Morne Morkel and Indian allrounder Irfan Pathan fashioned Delhi Daredevils’ eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the second game of the Indian Premier League on Thursday. Left-hander Pathan clobbered an unbeaten 42 off 20 deliveries to help Delhi score 100-2 off 11.1 overs after Morkel grabbed 3-18 to restrict Kolkata to 97-9 in a game reduced to 12 overs per side because of rain here at Eden Gardens. Delhi openers Aaron Finch (30) and captain Virender Sehwag (20) set up the chase with a 49-run opening stand before both fell in quick succession. Pathan then quelled an increasing asking rate with the help of three well-timed sixes to the leg side. Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir conceded Pathan and Morkel snatched the game away from the home side. “Morne bowled some real quality stuff but in the end we had a good total,” Gambhir said. “But then they batted really well, especially Pathan.” Earlier, the Delhi pace bowlers did not disappoint Sehwag, who decided to bowl fi rst after winning the toss. Morkel struck twice in his very fi rst over when he bowled South African compatriot Jacques Kallis (4) and fringe India batsman Manoj Tiwary (0) off successive yorker-length deliveries. Kallis tried to work the ball down the leg side and was bowled, while Tiwary suffered a fi rst-ball dismissal as he failed to bring down his bat in time and saw his stumps shattered. Morkel also grabbed the important wicket of Gambhir (16) just when the lefthander seemed to be leading a recovery. Gambhir tried to run the ball down to third man but managed to deviate it only on to the stumps. Kolkata were 55-6 at one stage but all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla ensured a fi ghting total as he smashed 26 off 17 balls with two sixes and a four before being dismissed in the penultimate over. Pace bowlers Roelof van der Merwe and Umesh Yadav chipped in with two wickets each. On Friday, the Harbhajan Singh-led Mumbai Indians host the Pune Warriors after winning the tournament’s opening fi xture in an away game against the defending champion Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday. Also, Rajasthan Royals play Kings XI Punjab in Jaipur.

Michelle Obama in Time’s 100 Fashion Icons list

LONDON: TIME magazine has listed the world’s 100 most infl uential style superstars in anticipation of its annual poll. While child actors-turneddesigners Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the First Lady and the ‘monster mother’ Lady Gaga made it to the list, many big-name creatives and fashion pioneers failed to feature, the Daily Mail reported. Divided into categories, the list is fairly exhaustive and includes designers and brands, models, muses, photographers and editors and stylists, whose careers stretch back to 1923 when TIME was launched. Still, as with any list-making endeavour, there were bound to be oversights. The 25-year-old Olsen duo join iconic creators such as Miuccia Prada, Coco Chanel and Christian Dior on the Designers and Brands list, which seems a strange choice when many prominent and highly infl uential succeeding designers, save for John Galliano, and Karl Lagerfeld, were clearly missing. Raf Simons, Christopher Bailey and Hedi Slimane, who is credited for bringing skinny jeans to the mainstream, were all left off the list, which doesn’t include any notable retailers either, such as Andrew Saks and Ikram Goldman. However a few headturners made the cut, such as Sarah Blakely, the inventor of Spanx, who TIME said “has helped shape the modern woman – literally”. Jacques Heim and Louis Reard, the men who invented the two piece swimsuit, which eventually became the bikini, also featured. On the list of Editors and Stylists, others may wonder where the more mainstream visionaries are who have made an impact, like Rachel Zoe. While more predictable mentions were included, such as Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, renowned fashion critics Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes were both left out. This is mostly noteworthy for the fact that Robin Gavensen, however, was mentioned. She is the Pulitzer prize winning Daily Beast writer who Karl Lagerfeld publicly claimed to have never heard of, after she wrote a less than shining review of his current designer status. Michelle Obama joins former First Lady Jackie Onassis in the muses category, who sit alongside the likes of Lady Gaga, Brigitte Bardot and Andy Warhol - however Warhol’s own iconic muse, Edie Sedgwick, is noticeably missing. In the models category, Nineties supers including Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss make an appearance, but Claudia Schiffer, ‘The Body’ Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington were left off. Gisele Bundchen, who topped the Forbes magazine World’s 10 Top-Earning Models in May last year, is listed, but as far as newer faces go it ends with her. Younger iconic faces like Lara Stone and Coco Rocha were left off, who have made waves in both editorial aspects of the modelling industry as well as their role in helping to re-shape it, bringing attention to its body issues and labour issues, respectively. While Heidi Klum was counted, Tyra Banks, who as well as building a a successful empire, was the fi rst African- American woman to feature on covers of both the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Victoria’s Secret catalogue, was surprisingly missing. TIME magazine’s top 100 fashion icons included: Giorgio Armani, Pierre Cardin, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, Tom Ford,Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, Levi Strauss, Gisele Bundchen, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Michelle Obama, Princess Diana

Actess Nayantara ‘Sri Rama Rajyam’ is back to fi lms after breaking up with Prabhu Deva. She has also managed to sign some promising fi lms in Tamil - Telugu and currently has three Telugu and a Tamil to opposite Gopichand. The actress return to industry and she is somehow linked with all of STR’s in the next projects, be it his music album ‘Love Anthem For World Peace’ or his movies. STR talks about this, “The moment Nayantara made her return. I heared a number of news that she is the heroine in ‘Vada Chennai’, doing in Vettai Mannan and Podaa Podi and is my heroine in Vaalu!” “She is not doing any of my movies and people should stop dragging her name with mine, be it for fi lms or in private life”, he further said. It was only rumour that some top notch directors were trying to bring together Simbu and Nayantara for a fi lm due to the demand among fans for their on screen chemistry. All are only rumours.
