Pune Institute fi lms to be screened at short fi lm festival
GUWAHATI: A package
of highly applauded diploma
fi lms made by Film and
Television Institute of India
(FTII), Pune, students, some
of whom went on to become
renowned fi lmmakers, will
be showcased at the 2nd Guwahati
International Short
Film Festival (GISFF) to
be held here from May 4-6,
celebrating the premier fi lm
school’s golden jubilee.
The specially-designed
Golden Jubilee package,
earlier screened at the Mumbai
International Film Festival
(MIFF, 2012), comprise
diploma fi lms made by the
likes of Kumar Shahani,
Girish Kasaravalli, Vidhu
Vinod Chopra, Sriram Raghavan,
Rajan Khosa and
several others, a GISFF
release informed here on
Thursday.
These fi lms give a glimpse
to the early promise that
these fi lmmakers exhibited
as student fi lmmakers who
learnt their craft at India’s
fi rst fi lm school that has
over the years churned out
many a big talent in both artistic
and technical streams
of fi lmmaking.
The technical crew of
these fi lms also comprised
then students of FTII.
Some of them later became
leading lights of the
fi lm industry, such as cinematographers
Jehangir
Chowdhury, Hari Nair, editors
the late Renu Saluja,
Rajkumar Hirani and others.
The fi lms from FTII to
be screened at the GISFF
include 37 Down Manmad
Passenger (Kumar Shahani),
Deccan Queen (KS
Raju), Murder at Monkety
Hill (Vidhu Vinod Chopra)
and The Eight Column Affair
(Sriram Raghavan).
Morkel and Pathan shines as Delhi defeat Kolkata by 8 wickets
Proteas pace bowler Morne
Morkel and Indian allrounder
Irfan Pathan fashioned
Delhi Daredevils’
eight-wicket victory over
Kolkata Knight Riders in
the second game of the Indian
Premier League on
Thursday.
Left-hander Pathan clobbered
an unbeaten 42 off
20 deliveries to help Delhi
score 100-2 off 11.1 overs
after Morkel grabbed 3-18
to restrict Kolkata to 97-9 in
a game reduced to 12 overs
per side because of rain here
at Eden Gardens.
Delhi openers Aaron Finch
(30) and captain Virender
Sehwag (20) set up the
chase with a 49-run opening
stand before both fell
in quick succession. Pathan
then quelled an increasing
asking rate with the help of
three well-timed sixes to the
leg side.
Kolkata captain Gautam
Gambhir conceded Pathan
and Morkel snatched the
game away from the home
side.
“Morne bowled some real
quality stuff but in the end
we had a good total,” Gambhir
said. “But then they batted
really well, especially
Pathan.”
Earlier, the Delhi pace bowlers
did not disappoint Sehwag,
who decided to bowl
fi rst after winning the toss.
Morkel struck twice in his
very fi rst over when he
bowled South African compatriot
Jacques Kallis (4)
and fringe India batsman
Manoj Tiwary (0) off successive
yorker-length deliveries.
Kallis tried to work the ball
down the leg side and was
bowled, while Tiwary suffered
a fi rst-ball dismissal
as he failed to bring down
his bat in time and saw his
stumps shattered.
Morkel also grabbed the
important wicket of Gambhir
(16) just when the lefthander
seemed to be leading
a recovery. Gambhir tried to
run the ball down to third
man but managed to deviate
it only on to the stumps.
Kolkata were 55-6 at one
stage but all-rounder Laxmi
Ratan Shukla ensured a
fi ghting total as he smashed
26 off 17 balls with two sixes
and a four before being
dismissed in the penultimate
over.
Pace bowlers Roelof van der
Merwe and Umesh Yadav
chipped in with two wickets
each.
On Friday, the Harbhajan
Singh-led Mumbai Indians
host the Pune Warriors after
winning the tournament’s
opening fi xture in an away
game against the defending
champion Chennai Super
Kings on Wednesday. Also,
Rajasthan Royals play Kings
XI Punjab in Jaipur.

Kingfi sher to kick off fashion show
KOCHI: ‘Kingfi sher Ultra’
and Storm Fashion
Company come together to
kick start South India’s biggest
fashion extravaganza,
‘Kingfi sher Ultra’ Kochi
International Fashion Week
2012 (Kingfi sher Ultra
KIFW) to be organized here
from April seven to 10.
Informing this at a news
conference here today,
Storm Fashion Company
CEO Gautham Sharma said
that 50 models, including
fi ve foreign models from
Portugal, Spain and Sri
Lanka would catwalk on
ramp with traditional Kerala
Sarees designed by Kerala’s
acclaimed fashion designer
Hari Anand in the four-day
extravaganza.
Besides Anand, 12 other
best designers in the country,
including PriaKataariaPuri,
Vivek Karuna Karan,
Riyaz Gangji, Monapali,
Hari Anand, Julie Vergese,
Prabhat Samasooriya, Gihan
Ediriweera, Darshanika
Ekanayake and Archana
Kochhar, splashing myriad
designs on the runway, he
added. The highlight of
the afternoon though would
be a sneak preview of Hari
Anand’s collection, unveiled
by the sensational ex-
Miss India World and Brand
Ambassador for the fashion
week, Parvathy Omanakuttan.
The collection which
would draw inspiration from
traditional weaving methods,
interpreted in a modern
way, comprised saris and
western formals.
The traditional Kerala
saris in pure Kasavu and
exquisite embroidery found
expression in modern fabrics
like georgette, satin, chiffon
and linen. A delighted Hari
Anand said, ‘I am glad to
be a part of the ‘Kingfi sher
Ultra’ Kochi International
Fashion Week 2012.
‘The entire collection focuses
on reviving the traditional
weaving techniques to
give a modern and contemporary
look. ‘The response
to the preview has been
overwhelming. ‘I now look
forward to showcasing the
entire collection early next
week’.
Michelle Obama in Time’s 100 Fashion Icons list
LONDON: TIME magazine
has listed the world’s
100 most infl uential style
superstars in anticipation of
its annual poll.
While child actors-turneddesigners
Mary-Kate and
Ashley Olsen, the First Lady
and the ‘monster mother’
Lady Gaga made it to the
list, many big-name creatives
and fashion pioneers
failed to feature, the Daily
Mail reported.
Divided into categories,
the list is fairly exhaustive
and includes designers
and brands, models, muses,
photographers and editors
and stylists, whose careers
stretch back to 1923 when
TIME was launched. Still,
as with any list-making endeavour,
there were bound
to be oversights.
The 25-year-old Olsen
duo join iconic creators
such as Miuccia Prada,
Coco Chanel and Christian
Dior on the Designers and
Brands list, which seems a
strange choice when many
prominent and highly infl uential
succeeding designers,
save for John Galliano, and
Karl Lagerfeld, were clearly
missing.
Raf Simons, Christopher
Bailey and Hedi Slimane,
who is credited for bringing
skinny jeans to the mainstream,
were all left off the
list, which doesn’t include
any notable retailers either,
such as Andrew Saks and
Ikram Goldman.
However a few headturners
made the cut, such
as Sarah Blakely, the inventor
of Spanx, who TIME
said “has helped shape the
modern woman – literally”.
Jacques Heim and Louis
Reard, the men who invented
the two piece swimsuit,
which eventually became
the bikini, also featured.
On the list of Editors and
Stylists, others may wonder
where the more mainstream
visionaries are who
have made an impact, like
Rachel Zoe.
While more predictable
mentions were included,
such as Anna Wintour
and Grace Coddington,
renowned fashion critics
Cathy Horyn and Suzy
Menkes were both left out.
This is mostly noteworthy
for the fact that Robin
Gavensen, however, was
mentioned. She is the Pulitzer
prize winning Daily
Beast writer who Karl Lagerfeld
publicly claimed to
have never heard of, after
she wrote a less than shining
review of his current designer
status.
Michelle Obama joins
former First Lady Jackie
Onassis in the muses category,
who sit alongside the
likes of Lady Gaga, Brigitte
Bardot and Andy Warhol
- however Warhol’s own
iconic muse, Edie Sedgwick,
is noticeably missing.
In the models category,
Nineties supers including
Naomi Campbell and Kate
Moss make an appearance,
but Claudia Schiffer, ‘The
Body’ Elle Macpherson and
Christy Turlington were left
off.
Gisele Bundchen, who
topped the Forbes magazine
World’s 10 Top-Earning
Models in May last year, is
listed, but as far as newer
faces go it ends with her.
Younger iconic faces like
Lara Stone and Coco Rocha
were left off, who have
made waves in both editorial
aspects of the modelling
industry as well as their
role in helping to re-shape
it, bringing attention to its
body issues and labour issues,
respectively.
While Heidi Klum was
counted, Tyra Banks, who as
well as building a a successful
empire, was the fi rst African-
American woman to
feature on covers of both the
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit
Issue and Victoria’s Secret
catalogue, was surprisingly
missing.
TIME magazine’s top 100
fashion icons included:
Giorgio Armani, Pierre Cardin,
Coco Chanel, Christian
Dior, Dolce and Gabbana,
Tom Ford,Calvin Klein,
Karl Lagerfeld, Christian
Louboutin, Alexander
McQueen, Levi Strauss,
Gisele Bundchen, Naomi
Campbell, Cindy Crawford,
Heidi Klum, Kate Moss,
The Beatles, Michael Jackson,
Lady Gaga, Madonna,
Michelle Obama, Princess
Diana
Nayan not doing any of my fi lms: STR
Actess Nayantara ‘Sri
Rama Rajyam’ is back to
fi lms after breaking up
with Prabhu Deva. She has
also managed to sign some
promising fi lms in Tamil -
Telugu and currently has
three Telugu and a Tamil to
opposite Gopichand.
The actress return to industry
and she is somehow
linked with all of STR’s in
the next projects, be it his
music album ‘Love Anthem
For World Peace’ or his movies.
STR talks about this,
“The moment Nayantara
made her return. I heared a
number of news that she is
the heroine in ‘Vada Chennai’,
doing in Vettai Mannan
and Podaa Podi and is my
heroine in Vaalu!”
“She is not doing any
of my movies and people
should stop dragging her
name with mine, be it for
fi lms or in private life”, he
further said.
It was only rumour that some
top notch directors were trying
to bring together Simbu
and Nayantara for a fi lm due
to the demand among fans
for their on screen chemistry.
All are only rumours.

துணைவேண்டாம் அன்பே போ
பிணமாக நடக்கின்றேன்
